About Stainless Steel.

Although kitchen sinks, refrigerators and other consumer goods are probably the most visible applications it is the industrial application where stainless steel has its biggest impact on our daily lives.

Some chemicals couldn't be produced without the use of corrosion resistant vessels and piping systems. Oil & gas production would often be close to impossible or very costly without the successful application of stainless steel.

But what is stainless steel? And what about other corrosion resistant alloys such as titanium and nickel based alloys? To give you a better understanding of these materials and a better appreciation of its uses we have developed this section of our website.

Stainless steel is a durable, eco-friendly, and low-maintenance material that can be used for building, tools, cutlery, sculpture, and any other number of things. It is an alloy that is made with at least 10.5% chromium content. It is called stainless because of its natural resistance to rust and corrosion.

What Are the Types of Stainless Steel?

Stainless Steel comes in five main types. Ferritic stainless steels are generally the least expensive, but don't have as broad an application. Martensitic stainless steels can be hardened by quenching and tempering and are used mainly in cutlery, general engineering, and aerospace. When hardened, they can become brittle, and so are not hardened all the way or are not used in general construction.

Austenitic stainless steels are the most widely used they are the most corrosion-resistant. Duplex stainless steels are a mixture of ferritic and austenitic to enhance strength and corrosion-resistance. The final type is precipitation hardening stainless steels. They, too, can be strengthened by heat treatment.

Resistance to Corrosion

Because of a chromium-rich oxide film that forms on the surface of the steel, it is able to withstand corrosion and rust for much longer periods of time than other metals. This film can reform itself, so scratches will not damage the steel. The only thing necessary to the oxide film is oxygen. If it is deprived of oxygen, it can fail, leaving parts open to pitting (where rust and decay gets in under the surface and is often undetected). It is also important to be certain that the stainless steel you purchase is high quality. If the film has been prevented from forming by contact with other metals, stainless steel can rust very rapidly.

Economical Option

Stainless steel is generally more expensive than other building materials. However, it is a long-term investment, as it takes less upkeep and lasts longer. Stainless steel is very easy to clean. It doesn't need any materials to go over it, lowering material costs. It is fairly lightweight for the amount of strength it provides, opening up construction options. It is fire resistant, and able to withstand a variety of temperatures.

In addition, it is available in a number of shades and styles, making it an aesthetically pleasing option. And, because it is corrosion and rust resistant, it has a much longer life span than most other materials.

In addition, stainless steel is 100% recyclable. 50% of new stainless steel is made from recycled stainless steel. This makes it a very environmentally friendly material. It can also be resold as scrap metal, adding that benefit to the investment.

Here are some links for more detailed information There is hardly a material thinkable that has found its way to so many applications in such a short period of time as stainless steel. Only developed in the first decade of the 20th century stainless steels are irreplaceable in the world today.

Why Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel and nickel alloys offer unique resistance to corrosion and suitability for high temperature environments. In addition, stainless can offer good formability and weldability. Stainless steel also offers low heat conductivity, with minimal expansion or contraction at various temperatures. Stainless steel provides superior strength in many applications. When compared to many other metals, stainless is the " better" investment.
