When it comes to buying flatware for your home, there are several choices that you can make. Certainly, the most popular kinds of flatware that many people prefer is that made from stainless steel or from sterling silver. In this article, we take a look at the difference between stainless steel flatware and sterling silver flatware, along with how to care for it.

However, when it comes to buying such flatware there is one major difference you will notice almost immediately between both stainless steel and sterling silver, and that is the price. In many cases, stainless steel flatware is somewhat less expensive than its sterling silver counterpart. But let us first take a look at what these two types of flatware are made from.

Stainless steel flatware is made up of several different types of composite steel, the main ones being chromium and nickel. It is the nickel in this kind of flatware, which helps to provide resistance against the metal becoming corroded. The best type of flatware you can purchase for your home made from these metals is one that has 18% chromium and 10% nickel in its makeup.

          ]]>

As for sterling silver, flatware as mentioned previously this is more expensive to purchase than its stainless steel counterpart. But where the above mentioned is made up of composite steel materials, this particular kind of flatware contains more than 90% (92.5%) pure silver and 7.5% of other metals. In most cases, the additional metal used to make such flatware is copper.

What is important however is that when shopping for any new kind of flatware for your home that you take your time over choosing which product it is you want? If you can and are able to when buying it, take the item out of its packaging prior to purchase. This enables you to feel how it sits in your hand and if it is, has the right balance of weight in the handle.

Also, as you look at the products also look at the packaging in which the product is presented. Look at the other information provided on the package a good quality flatware product will show that it meets acceptable standards of manufacture both at home and abroad.

When it comes to caring for your flatware there are a number of different products available to ensure that it remains in the best condition possible. Certainly, for stainless steel ones al you need is a good quality cleanser, which can be purchased at your local hardware store or grocery store.

But as well as their being good quality cleaners for stainless steel flatware today you can also get good quality cleaners for sterling silver flatware as well. But these products have been specifically developed in order to help the silver retain its condition, they work to remove sulfur without actually causing any damage or making it warp. One of the easiest ways of ensuring that it stays in tiptop condition is by getting some baking soda (dry) and then rub it on to the metal with your fingers.

Like many people born well after the 60s ended, I love the music of that era. It sounds much fresher to my ears than does most of the music recorded today. These seven bands are my most favorite.

(#1) The Beatles – Surprising pick, right? Sometimes conventional wisdom is on target. Yes, The Beatles really are the greatest band of all time (and thus, obviously, the best band of the 1960s.) Considering they recorded their final album, Abbey Road, in 1969 they are really a “purely 60s” band (unlike most on this list which went on to record more music into the 70s (and in some cases beyond.)

My favorite Beatles album is 1968′s self titled double album which is most well known as The White Album.

(#2) The Rolling Stones – Much of The Stones best music was recorded in the ’70s, not the ’60s but that being said they definitely recorded a huge amount of stone cold classics in the ’60s too.

(#3) The Who – Like The Stones, they recorded a lot of their best stuff in the ’70s. But then again they did recorded Tommy and a lot of their most famous singles (including “My Generation” of course) in the ’60s. The musicianship of this band always blows me away and I think they were the best live band of the decade. I definitely recommend getting the Live at Leeds CD, I think it’s the best live album ever.

          ]]>

(#4) The Jimi Hendrix Experience – They only released three albums (all of them in 1967 and 1968) but all three albums are absolute must have classics. I think my personal favorite is the final of the three: Electric Ladyland which is a real sprawling psychedelic double album that includes many different styles of music.

(#5) The Beach Boys – This selection isn’t entirely on the strength of Pet Sounds. They did release a lot of other great music that sometimes gets overshadowed by Pet Sounds. All of this being stated, this selection was made mostly because of the greatness of Pet Sounds (and the mystical Smile which was finally realized by Brian Wilson almost 40 years later.)

(#6) Pink Floyd – The ’60s Floyd of Syd Barrett was a different beast than the ’70s Floyd lead by David Gilmour & Roger Waters. 1967′s Piper at the Gates of Dawn is one of my all time favorite albums. I also highly recommend Syd Barrett’s two solo albums (they were both released in 1970) if you are into this sort of psychedelic pop music.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the 1970s Pink Floyd too especially Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and Animals but I don’t think the ’60s Barrett lead Floyd should be as overlooked as they are!

(#7) Led Zeppelin – Most people think of Zep as a ’70s band but they did release their first two albums in the ’60s and I actually prefer those ’60s albums over their ’70s work (although of course that was great stuff too.)

                Cleaning stainless steel flatware

Stainless steel is essentially iron which has been infused with more than 10% chromium. It is very good at resisting corrosion and rust through normal wear and tear, but occasionally it will dull. Stainless steel is noted for its hardness and ability to withstand everyday use. To make the flatware shine a little of the chromium is used to form the hard oxide coating on the surface. This is like a hard outer shell protecting the steel on the inside. Over time, and subject to use and exposure to harsh elements like dishwashing detergent….this hard protective shell slowly wears down. Frequently the exterior of flatware will dull and does not retain its luster. This is a normal occurrence for all flatware – although it should not occur for quite some time (depending upon the initial quality of the silverware.

– there are a number of possible ways to clean it up and restore some of its original shine. One such method used to remove streaking is to take a soft dish towel rub a little Olive Oil on the flatware….this should remove streaking. One can also polish and shine stainless steel by using Vinegar and a soft cloth to wipe the flatware – this is also good to remove heat stains from the flatware. If you don’t have any vinegar, club soda can also be used as an alternative.

          ]]>

– try to rinse off any salty or acidic foods stuck to the flatware. Usually people will put utensils in the dishwasher and then wait upwards of 3 days to actually run the dishwasher. This extended time is a killer on your stainless steel flatware and will dull it quicker. An important note to remember is that detergents are harsh chemicals used to clean off stubborn foods….but they can also damage your flatware if they come in contact with flatware which is wet. Usually dark spots are the result. You should already know how to remove those spots if you read the paragraph above.

These days it is not surprising to see very nice stainless steel pots and pans. The same principals for flatware apply to these utensils as well. Try not to ever let boiling water completely evaporate from a dry pot or pan…this will definitely cause discoloration. Frequently, due to the conductivity of stainless steel – hot spots will occur within your pots and pans – try not to let food items burn in your steel utensils as this too will cause discoloration.

– then washing by hand is the way to go. Not all of us are willing to take such time, but on occasion this is not a bad idea. Simply clean the items with warm water and a gentle detergent and dry them by had immediately. Letting them drip dry will cause spotting and streaking. If a haze or blur occurs over time, a gentle silver polish can sometimes be used to remove this. Certain foods are more corrosive than others and should be removed from the stainless steel as soon as possible.

Remember –try not to use harsh abrasives or steel wool on stainless steel as it will surely scratch the surface and cause additional problems.

I don’t know about you, but in all honesty, I love cleaning the windows. The sparkle of a clean window seems to make everything look a little cleaner inside the house too. What becomes annoying is the residue some of them seem to leave on the windows. That cloudy little film that tells me that its not all the way clean. Streak free window cleaners are out there and don’t stop til you find one.

A streak free window cleaner will typically be made of one of two ingredients. Grain alcohol or ammonia, are the two, which effectively eliminate the grease, smoke, soot, or other films that can build up on your window and create streaks when you attempt to wash them.

Streak free window cleaners end up saving you a lot of time over those which don’t say they are streak free, because, simply stated, quite often they aren’t. They not only save you time, but they inevitably save you money. If you have to wash it three times before its clean, then the cheap window cleaner that you bought that you thought was a bargain, ends up being not quite so worth it.

          ]]>

There is nothing quite so annoying as spending an hour cleaning ten windows in your house only to find that what you used to clean them wasn’t a streak free window cleaner and that hazy film is lying on your window, telling you its not entirely clean and you need to do it all over again. I don’t’ know about you, but wasting time isn’t on my list of things to do.

A streak free window cleaner has the power to eliminate the streaks before they happen because it cuts through the things that make them, such as nicotine, smoke, grease and road dirt or dust that blows against the window.

I love clean windows, and the sun shining into the house through them sop I tend to wash windows a lot. What I don’t love is extra work for no apparent reason. Hey, I said I liked to clean windows.. I didn’t say I was a masochist. I want them cleaned and streak free every time and because of that, I buy streak free window cleaners which are made with something that’s going to do the job the first time around.

by faz the persian

Aluminum is the most abundant metal that exists on the earth’s crust. Aluminum is a very soft metal and in most cases, it is mixed with another metal so that it becomes a bit more harder and can be used in the manufacture of boats and many other equipments.

Aluminum is usually mixed with metals like magnesium, copper, zinc and even manganese which creates an alloy that is very strong and also durable. Apart from being used for the manufacture of boats, aluminum can also be used to manufacture quite a number of things which include cooking pots, tin cans, electrical works, paints and so many other things. In the manufacture of boats, aluminum is mostly used because it is very light in weight and is very resistant to rust. It is the most suitable metal for the manufacture of boats because of those two properties.

There are a few methods that you can use to clean your aluminum boat so as to maintain the good look of the boat. As we know, aluminum is a rust resistant metal and so you don’t have to worry a lot about the boat rusting but the metal can accumulate a lot of dust and because it may have a motor that helps you move around, there will probably be a coat of grease on the boat that attracts a lot of dust. One method you can use to clean your aluminum boat is to scrub it. It is advisable to use a material that is a bit scratchy so as to properly scrub the boat and leave it sparkling clean. You do not need to use any cleaning agents just soap and water will do the trick.

          ]]>

Another good method of cleaning an aluminum boat is by use of some mild abrasives. A boat made from aluminum may usually change color after a long time of being used without being cleaned. The surface may turn dark brown. The dark brown color is usually associated with rust but we know very well that aluminum does not rust easily. The dark brown color is usually dust and dirt that has accumulated over a long period of time forming a layer of dirt. This kind of dirt cannot be easily cleaned off by just scrubbing. You may need to use a mild cleaning detergent that will help in removing that layer of dirt. First, you need to remove the boat from the water then turn it over.

These kinds of boats are used in fishing and are small is size and relatively light in weight. You will need to use a scratchy pad maybe steel wool to scrub the surface. If you use a mild detergent, it will be easier for you to clean the boat and leave it sparkling clean. Aluminum boats should not be painted because it is very hard to clean a painted surface. You will end up ruining the paint job that was done on the boat and therefore aluminum boats should be left unpainted so that the boat can be cleaned easily.

Auto glass that is clean and clear? I know what you might be thinking. I already get my windows clean, thats easy enough right? While they may until your auto glass is CLEAR its not really clean. Will you buy that?

OK. Enough small talk lets git r done. While to many this is no surprise some may not realize that

is a chemical compound consisting of nitrogen and hydrogen atoms with the formula NH3. At standard temperature and pressure, ammonia is a gas. and has a characteristic pungent odor.

That is the science of ammonia. However it is used in household cleaning products, one being glass cleaner. Due to some of the chemical parts of ammonia I recommend using a auto glass cleaner.

Why? Well ammonia is known for stripping the natural oils in vinyl and rubber, as well as leather. It has a strong gaseous odor to it that makes it when it is used inside your car.

          ]]>

Thats a good question. Use an auto glass cleaner that is ammonia-free of course, and one that is good at cutting through road grime and bug splatter. is really great at breaking up all the different contaminants that you are likely to encounter on your auto glass. It is also safe to use on tinted windows.

When you begin to clean your automobile glass, either clean all of the outside first, or begin on all of the inside glass. Why? So that any streaks you may leave in the process, can be seen more easily. With that said, here are the materials you will need:

Take your glass cleaner and apply it to a 2′section of the front windshield. Take your steel wool and using a and gently work the glass cleaner around.

(Don’t worry, in my years of experience I have yet to see this type of steel wool damage a window. Speaking of scratches,You are more likely to scratch your window at the start of rain or a storm, due to the surface dirt getting pushed around by your windshield wipers)

Afterwards use your towel to dry up the cleaner on the windshield. Is it smooth? If yes, proceed to the other half doing the exact same thing. Continue this around the whole of the car, cleaning the auto glass.

Now for those hard to reach places on the inside of the the auto glass, with the towel wrapped around it.

It can be any thing you can think of, that will reach back on to the surface you are trying to reach. Just be careful not to scratch up the window.

The in order to keep them operating as long as possible, you want to use a on them when you clean your auto glass to keep them soft and in good working condition.

by The Library of Congress

Most people think of a steam cleaner as either a fancy vacuum cleaner or carpet cleaner. This mistake could stop you from owning one of the best cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting tools you can use in your home or your business. Although you can buy a steam cleaner that is also a vacuum cleaner a steam cleaner is much more than that. Likewise, even though steam cleaners are excellent for disinfecting and sanitizing carpets a true steam cleaner is not limited to carpets.

A vacuum cleaner has its purpose, vacuuming loose dirt and debris from surfaces. A vacuum cleaner will not clean, disinfect and sanitize the surface being vacuumed. A carpet cleaner cleans your carpet by injecting steam and/or hot water into your carpet along with a chemical-based cleaner. After injecting this combination into your carpet a carpet cleaner will virtually vacuum away the dirt that this process dislodges from your carpet. Neither a vacuum cleaner nor a carpet cleaner will go beyond these functions.

Steam cleaners clean, sanitize and disinfect in an entirely different way…they use high temperature (225° F and above) dry steam vapor. When the dry steam vapor comes into contact with the surface being treated it not only thoroughly cleans this surface it also disinfects and sanitizes it. Furthermore, the dry steam vapor penetrates cracks and crevices common chemical-based cleaners cannot. This eliminates all germs, bacteria, allergens, mold and mildew on the treated surface.

          ]]>

The obvious uses for steam cleaners are in your kitchen and bathroom where you can clean all hard surfaces like floors, counter tops and appliances. But don’t stop there. A steam cleaner is also excellent for cleaning cook tops, ovens, grout, tile and cabinets. On a regular basis you should also treat mattresses, upholstery, carpets and draperies with your steam cleaner to eliminate germs, bacteria, viruses, dust mites, allergens, mold and mildew. Steam cleaners are even effective in killing bed bugs.

One of the first things you will notice when you use a steam cleaner in your kitchen or bathroom is that there is no longer any chemical residue left on the surfaces you clean. With chemical-based cleaners you notice the residue that is left behind after cleaning. Not only is that chemical residue harmful to the treated surfaces it also attracts new dirt making it necessary to clean more often. Cleaning more often means more work for you and more cost for the chemical based cleaners. In addition, you are doing more and more damage to the surfaces being cleaned by continually using chemical-based cleaners to clean them.

With a steam cleaner there is no residue left behind. That is because a steam cleaner uses only water heated to more than 225° F to clean, sanitize and disinfect. Not only will you leave no residue behind with a steam cleaner you will also eliminate the effects of chemical-based cleaners on your allergies.

Do you ever find your eyes tearing when you are watching television? Do you get congested when you try to sleep at night robbing you of valuable rest? Do your hands dry out and crack after cleaning with chemical-based cleaners? All of this can be caused by common allergies that using a steam cleaner can help eliminate.

Don’t think that the only uses for your steam cleaner are indoors; steam cleaners are very versatile and can be used to accomplish many of your outdoor cleaning tasks as well. Steam cleaners are great for cleaning deck or patio furniture, especially glass top tables. They are also excellent for cleaning your outdoor grill; cutting through grease and grime very fast with considerably less effort than scrubbing the grill with a brush.

You would also be amazed at how well a steam cleaner will detail your car. Clean the wheels and tires with your steam cleaner and also use it on the upholstery, carpeting and floor mats. You can also use a steam cleaner to clean, sanitize and disinfect many of the surfaces of a boat. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

So don’t make the same mistake most people make by thinking of a steam cleaner as either a vacuum cleaner or a carpet cleaner. If you do you will never experience the amazing cleaning ability of a steam cleaner.

Terry de Havilland is a rock star among shoe designers. The biggest names in music fell in love with his shoes in the 70s. He partied with the guys from Led Zeppelin and designed the shoes they rocked out in. In between his couture design business and his new Autumn/Winter 2011 line, we got the London-based “Rock n’ Roll Cobbler” to slow down for a minute and “Take 5.”

I guess my designs just appealed to the rock set. The more flamboyant and sexy the designs became the more popular they were with the rock chicks. In the 70s Kings Road was definitely the place to hang out. Led Zep’s management Swansong had their office there, next to Granny Takes a Trip, who dressed everyone. Then there was Paradise Garage, Alkazura, Anthony Price and the infamous Roebuck pub where we all used to hang out.

I opened my shop Terry de Havilland – Cobblers to the World in 1972. The interior looked like a Venetian bordello – all peach mirror glass, a pink tented ceiling, oversized crystal chandelier and purple studded velvet banquette seating. It was a hit with the rock stars who used to hang out while their girls spent their money on my shoes. In the mid 70s, I launched my range of men’s footwear that was equally as flamboyant with lots of python detailing, Cuban heels and stacked platforms which proved just as popular. Everyone from Bonzo from Led Zep, to Johnny Bindon, to Keith Moon, to Ginger Baker, Tim Curry, Rudolf Nureyev and bizarrely Demis Roussos used to wear them.

Nisha

I’ve never been a shrinking violet when it comes to my designs and they were all pretty “out there.” There were embroidered dragon wedges, glitter high-heeled stiletto cowgirl boots, metallic snakeskin platforms, lightning bolt sandals with spring heels, even a pair of flashing light wedged sandals with mercury tilt switches. It’s almost impossible to pick a favourite . They all made their own statement.

          ]]>

Roxie

It all started back in the 1940s when my dad used to make shoes for the Windmill Girls during the war. I guess he was pretty rock n’ roll too in his own way. I learnt everything from him and his designs still influence me to this day. It was his 40s platforms and wedges that inspired me to bring them back in the late 60s updated in acid trip-inspired colours and shapes. I worked with him from 1960 until his untimely death in 1970. He was electrocuted in the factory and died in my arms. So I took over the business and launched the original Terry de Havilland brand which was extremely successful until 1980 when it fell victim to a global recession.

I then set up Kamikazi shoes which specialised in alternative footwear for punks and Goths. It was a very successful brand turning out over 800 pairs a day from my London-based factory and selling all over the world. In 1990, I launched the Magic Shoe Company also specialising in alternative footwear. I developed the first commercial range of latex thigh boots and brought back block-heeled platforms using holographic fabrics and light reflective leather for the Cybergoths. I designed Transmuter Boots with huge stacked wedges and spiked rubber panels – which were worn by Marilyn Manson. It was a crazy decade and I had a lot of fun.

On Christmas Eve 2000, I suffered a minor heart attack and decided that it was time to get back to my roots and start designing in my own name again. The timing seemed right somehow and I could see a lot of referencing of my work from the 70s starting to appear on the runways. My vintage shoes were fetching silly amounts in auction houses. I had more shoes in museums than I had in shops so I decided to give it one more go. Initially I made the shoes on a made-to-order basis, throwing Cocktails and Heels parties in various locations. All the shoes were handmade in London. Then in 2004, following a BBC documentary, I entered into a licensing agreement and the Terry de Havilland brand was re-launched.

After the licensing agreement came to an end I decided to take control of the brand again and have now brought it back in-house. As well as my ready to wear range, I still make custom-made footwear in London. All the designs are done in my London based studio and I make all the prototypes myself. I’m having a lot of fun again.

Tammy

The rock n’ roll connection just somehow happened. I can’t remember how – I was there at the time. I guess I was as crazy as them. I had some really mad times hanging out with Bonzo when Led Zep were touring America in the 70s. One time when I was in New York doing a trade show I hooked up with Bonzo for the evening. I vaguely remember saying “That’s it Bonzo, I’m off home” to him after we’d polished off a bottle of brandy. I vaguely remember running for a plane at JFK airport. I always carried my passport and ticket with me. I woke up at Heathrow and couldn’t work out where my luggage had gone. When I phoned my factory they’re like “What are you doing back in London? You’re meant to be in New York until the end of the week”. Bonkers. Bonzo was a total lunatic and took no prisoners!

I’d personally take 2 pairs for myself:

1. My crystal commando creepers which are versions of the ones I designed for Martin Gore for the Depeche Mode “Tour of the Universe” gigs last year.

2. My black leather and python Cuban-heeled boots with the words “F*** You” in crystal on the soles.

Then I’d take 3 pairs for my old lady Liz:

1. The Crystal Emmas

Emma

2. The Dagger Gemmas

Dagger Gemma

3. The gold python Margaux.

by Cyron

Polishing plays an important role in increasing the grace of your bike. Polishing can give a brand new look to your chopper motorcycle. There are various types of polish available in the market, but you should use only automotive polish. Automotive polish is specially made for polishing motorcycles. These types of automotive polish give shininess .

Maximum part of the chopper motorcycles is made up of chrome. Therefore, chrome is having its own place in manufacturing. Chrome is used to give a blazing and flashy look. But it is not just about looks. Chrome is highly impressive and shines much better as compare to other metal used in the motorcycles.

Chrome can get rust and rust is the enemy of all bike fans. There is nothing as disappointing than rusted chrome on an attractive bike. Polishing is very essential as it can remove the surface oxidation from your motorcycle that feeds the rust. It can also buff out every small scratch or stain, which is left unchecked and become the breeding ground of the rust later.

          ]]>

Metal polish can protect chrome very efficiently from rusting. Metal polish is strong enough to clean the surface deeply and removes the rough stains, surface oxidation and soap or water stains. If chrome part of your chopper motorcycle has being heavily rusted, then you may need to re-coat the chrome. This can be an expensive option; therefore you must polish your bike at regular interval of time. You can seal and protect all the metals in your motorcycle with a shield of polish. It is recommended to polish your motorcycle after every six months.

How to Polish

You can use buffing kit to polish your bike effectively and easily. Polishing requires different types of polish for different surfaces.

You can’t polish chrome with an aluminum polish, as aluminum polish is useless on chrome and it is a waste of money. Therefore, you should consider the types of metals, which you want to polish – chrome, aluminum, stainless steel etc. and then buy the polish. There is a wide selection of specialized polishes available in the market.

Auto detailing is the process of cleaning the exterior and interior of automobiles, trailers, and trucks. There are many different automobile cleaning processes that must take place to achieve a truly clean, like-new finish. Machines and products for these processes include a steam car wash, mobile car wash, carpet extractor, stem cleaner, and cleaning solutions. To find the right systems, let’s examine the unique nature of detailing automobiles.

A car’s interior includes a dashboard, seat upholstery, carpets, glass, and other surfaces. All these surfaces are softer than the metal body that forms the exterior of the surface. If high pressure levels were used to clean vehicle interiors, surfaces may be damaged and carpets would become far too wet to dry with the limited airflow characteristic of automobiles.

It is better to use a carpet cleaner to clean the softer surfaces such as seat upholstery and carpets. Low-flow carpet extractors with a specialized upholstery wand are best. The special wand enables auto detailers to reach the small crevices of a car’s interior, while the low-flow technology ensures optimum drying times as low as 2-6 hours. Not only does this increase productivity, but reduces necessary vehicle storage.

          ]]>

For the dashboard, inside windows, and other surfaces, a steam cleaner would be best. These machines utilize high steam temperatures up to 360°F to dissolve stubborn residues with ease. Residues can be extracted, if an attached vacuum is included, or wiped away.

While steam cleaners may be powerful machines, they are not efficient for cleaning vehicle exteriors. Their low pressure levels and low steam density require additional wiping that may scratch or damage a vehicle’s painted surfaces. Pressure washers, on the other hand, are powerful machines that provide high powered pressure levels to blast away grease, dirt, tree sap, and other residues quickly. For cleaning automobiles it is essential to purchase a system with a pressure level at or below 1500 psi is sufficient.

For the automobile cleaning process, the flow rate should be as low as possible. There are two reasons for this. The first relates to the availability of water. A high flow rate invariably means that large quantities of water will be used and hence wasted. Additionally, in some places there may not be adequate drainage facilities. In such cases, water run-off might also become a problem.

For people who run a professional cleaning company detailing automobiles, it is better to select both machines. It improves the cleaning efficiency and shortens cleaning time. Carpet cleaners are used for cleaning the interior carpets and upholstery, while pressure washers are used for harder, exterior surfaces.

Also available on the market today is an extensive assortment of the best green cleaning solutions for auto detailing applications. Whether you are looking for a windshield washer fluid, car wash, truck wash, tire shine, glass cleaner, carpet cleaner, upholstery cleaner, or more, top suppliers offer advanced solutions for virtually all applications. Best of all, these green formulas are plant-based, non-toxic, and environmentally safe. To make sure the solutions you purchase meet these requirements, take a look at the MSDS sheet available by contacting the supplier.
